Our Approach

Yoga was never supposed to be just a workout.

You’ve likely seen at least one of the thousands of articles and studies on the seemingly endless mental, physical, and emotional benefits of yoga. Maybe that’s what brought you here.

What you might not know is that most of the benefits discovered through these studies come from much slower, gentler practices than we see in many gyms and fitness-oriented studios today.

Many of the benefits you may have seen published are related in some way to yoga’s capacity to regulate the nervous system and hypothalamic-pituitary axis (HPA), both of which are stress response systems. (We know how adversely stress impacts all the systems of the body).

The caveat is that to receive these benefits, yoga has to be taught and practiced in a way that down-regulates the nervous system, and cultivates stress resilience. When we practice at too fast a pace and do yoga with a fitness mindset, we can miss these benefits.

Kindred Yoga Owner, Christa Stebbing, started her teaching journey in a hot yoga studio where the emphasis was very much about stretching further, pushing the body harder, and achieving fancy poses.

This approach was great in her 20s, but as years went on she realized that while she had a toned body, she didn’t actually FEEL healthy. She suffered from digestion issues, menstrual dysregulation, and skin issues. After years of practice, she still couldn’t connect with the deep sense of calm she knew was possible through yoga.

In 2013 she went to the Himalayan Institute for a 10-Day training, and it changed everything. She experienced a more mindful pace of yoga, breath work, and relaxation practices that almost immediately brought her the deep peace and ease she had been searching for. By the end of the 10 Days, her digestion began to improve. Soon after, her skin began to clear and her menstrual cycle regulated.

Kindred Yoga’s unique style is drawn from Christa’s training at the Himalayan Institute, specialized training in Anatomy and Physiology, continual exploration of mind-body-spirit techniques, and ongoing mentorship from an experienced Physical Therapist (who also trains all Kindred Yoga Certified Teachers).
